Bed base – description and uses

Bed base – description and uses

Bed Base: Definition and Origin

Definition

A bed base is a structure on which a mattress is placed to improve the sleeper’s comfort. It consists of a wooden or metal frame fitted with springs or slats. It acts as a shock absorber, designed to support the sleeper’s weight without deforming. It provides ventilation for the mattress as well as support. You should not overlook the choice of your bed base, as it is the combination of mattress and bed base that will provide you with a restful night’s sleep and the comfort you need.
Bed bases come in various types: metal, spring, slatted, block-based or rope-based. The bed base is either placed on a wooden or metal frame or simply attached to legs. In a bed, it is essential to place a bed base under the mattress. For hygiene reasons, it must not rest directly on the floor. Similarly, you should never place a mattress directly on the floor.

Origins

People have always been concerned with their comfort at night. In the early days, sleeping arrangements were spartan, consisting of animal skins or layers of dried seaweed. The bed base first appeared in ancient Egypt. The wooden bed was fitted with strips of canvas that served as the base. The whole structure was covered with wickerwork, which provided the padding.
In France, the bed as we know it today first appeared in the Middle Ages. Initially, these were large communal beds for ten to fourteen people. Then, with the advent of married life and the rise of Christianity, double beds became essential. The wooden bed consisted of a bed base made of planks and a straw mattress. It was around the 13th century that the technical vocabulary relating to beds developed, thanks to the king’s court and the numerous invasions of neighbouring territories.
In the 19th century, attitudes changed; a new era dawned, and the bedroom became the focus of everyone’s attention. There was a focus on hygiene: rooms were aired, dusted and kept open; this marked the end of overcrowding and the beginning of a bedroom associated with moral values. The layout of the bedroom changed, as did the materials used. Spring bed bases began to appear and have continued to evolve ever since. Today, we have a wide range of bed bases available, including slatted, block-spring and relaxation models.

Bed Base Description

The influence of the bed base on sleep

The bedroom is a place where we spend a third of our lives. Hence the importance of optimally arranging the bedroom – and the bed in particular – to promote restorative sleep, which is synonymous with good health and well-being. Studies show that a good-quality bed base and mattress help you fall asleep more easily and prevent you from waking up during the night.
In 1992, Professor Touchon, a neurologist in Montpellier, scientifically demonstrated a link between sleep quality and the quality of bedding. With a new bed base and mattress, the duration of sleep remained unchanged, but the quality of sleep improved significantly. Rest time is distributed more evenly across the different sleep stages. People sleeping on new bedding enjoy more restorative sleep; they move less, and wake up feeling more energised. As the sleeper is better positioned and better supported by a suitable bed base, mattress and pillow, the body experiences fewer pressure points, which prevents the sleeper from being disturbed.

How to choose a bed base

Choosing bedding requires careful consideration. The quality of your sleep depends on your choice of mattress and bed base. Their lifespan is approximately 10 years. The mattress absorbs two-thirds of the mechanical stress placed on the bedding by your body, whilst the bed base supports one-third of the sleeper’s movements. This means that the bed base must absorb this stress without deforming under your weight. It is recommended that you choose a bed base to suit the type of mattress you have. This will extend the lifespan of your mattress and improve ventilation.
It is essential to test the bed base and mattress before buying them. To try out your future bedding, you should lie down for several minutes, close your eyes and focus on how it feels. Your body should not sink into the mattress. If the bed is to be used by a couple, you should try it out together. If you notice that your bed base sags when you lie on it, it is time to replace it.
Good bedding should help the body to relax, relieving the strain caused by gravity. Your muscles and lower back should relax. The bed base must be suited to each person’s body shape. It should be both supple and firm, providing even support for the body. The spine must be supported in a straight line, without any twisting or strain on the ligaments or muscles. You should feel comfortable in your bedding and not experience any pressure points on your body.
Bed bases fall into two main categories: fixed bed bases and relaxation bed bases. A fixed bed base can be slatted or spring-based, and may or may not be upholstered. A relaxation bed base can be slatted or feature individual support blocks. The size of the bed base you choose should depend on your height and whether you sleep alone or with a partner. You should not feel your partner’s movements. Finally, the height of the bed base is also important. It is very comfortable to be able to sit on the edge of the bed without having to bend down.

Spring bed base

General principle

A bed base spring is a metal component that utilises elastic properties to absorb the energy generated by movement. The spring must return to its original shape after being compressed. A spring bed base consists of a uniform layer of springs, set within a wooden frame. A spring bed base pairs perfectly with a spring mattress

There are several types of spring:
- Biconical springs are spiral-shaped. The springs are connected to one another by steel wires. This type of bed base is particularly suitable for heavier people or those who toss and turn at night. The support is firm and very progressive.
- Continuous-wire springs consist of a single steel wire knitted into spirals. This suspension system forms a mesh of wires that ensures firm and even comfort across the bed base.
- Pocket springs are individually wrapped in fabric pockets. This high-performance technology is one of the best sleeping solutions available. This bed base improves body support by increasing the number of contact points. This ensures effective muscle relaxation and improved blood circulation.

Types of upholstered spring bed bases

Upholstered bed base

The spring box spring is constructed from a wooden frame comprising rigid crosswise slats that support the springs. It is covered with a fabric known as ticking. This system helps prevent damage to the bedding and allows you to match the ticking of your bed base to your mattress. The upholstered bed base is recommended for those who have a bed frame. This gives you an attractive bed that is easier to make. However, ventilation will be poor.
The upholstered spring bed base is available with two types of padding. This padding is necessary to insulate the springs from the ticking and the mattress. The spring system is covered either by a layer of natural materials – such as plant-based horsehair, hemp or maize fibres – or by a foam sheet. This padding plays a role in comfort as well as in the ventilation of the bed base.

Cupped or classic

There are trough-shaped upholstered bed bases, meaning their edges are slightly raised. The trough shape of the bed base prevents the mattress from slipping. The mattress is more stable. The base of the trough is non-slip and has a dust-proof lining. It helps maintain the mattress’s bounce. This model is very practical for making the bed.
The classic bed base is flat. It provides uniform support for your mattress. It fits more easily into a bed frame and gives your bedding a modern look. This style of bed base is available in an extra-flat version, allowing it to be fitted into any bed.

Advantages and disadvantages

It is strongly recommended that you place a spring mattress on a slatted bed base. This ensures that the bi-axial comfort is extended right down to the bed base. The softness and suppleness of your bedding will be preserved with a mattress suited to your bed base. This will help extend the lifespan of both the bed base and the mattress.
The main disadvantage of spring bed bases is that they do not allow you to adjust the level of body support, unlike slatted bed bases where support can be increased in specific areas. Even with new technologies such as pocket springs, the ability to adjust firmness and support cannot match that of slatted bed bases. Spring bed bases are becoming less and less common on the market. You should not use a spring bed base with a wool or latex mattress, as this combination would damage the mattress.

Slatted bed base

General principle

A slatted bed base consists of a wooden or metal frame and wooden slats positioned perpendicular to the length of the bed. The wooden slats provide optimal support. The wooden slats vary in width and spacing. The wood used may be beech, birch, pine or poplar. Some slats are made of solid wood, whilst others consist of layers of wood glued together, known as plywood. Fibre-glass versions are now also available. A double bed base features a central support beam to ensure independent sleeping zones and greater durability.
This type of bed base is equally suitable for foam, latex and water mattresses. Slatted bed bases provide good support for the mattress. The quality of the support depends on the elasticity, width and number of slats used. These are sturdy and reliable bed bases. The slats are both non-warping and flexible, which gives them excellent durability. Solid wood bed bases are of a higher quality.

Types of slatted bed bases

Upholstered slatted bed base

The upholstered slatted bed base is covered with ticking or felt. The fabric covering protects the bedding from damage and provides even support. However, ventilation is poor. This bed base vaguely resembles a mattress, as you cannot see inside it. They are often fitted with a dust-proof backing. This type of bed base can be fitted into a bed frame. In this case, it creates a taller, contemporary-style bed that makes it easy to sit down and get up.
Among upholstered slatted bed bases, there are two types: the extra-flat upholstered bed base, which is ideal for fitting into a bed frame. It is approximately 3 to 9 cm high. The trough-shaped upholstered bed base holds the mattress in place so that it does not slip. This makes it easier to make the bed.
The upholstered bed base is reputed to be more comfortable, but more difficult to repair if the ticking tears. The ticking is hypoallergenic. It can even accommodate certain types of spring mattresses. The upholstered bed base is available in a range of colours to complement your interior décor.

Exposed slatted bed base

The slats of the bed base are exposed. The mattress therefore benefits from excellent ventilation. Moisture is thus wicked away more easily as air circulates more freely all around the bed.
It is therefore recommended for people suffering from allergies or rheumatism. As a result, in summer, the sensation of heat will be reduced. As the slats are exposed, you can easily clean the bed base, removing dust and allergens.
There are certain factors to consider when choosing a slatted bed base. A flexible slat will ensure a high level of comfort. The articulation of the slats allows your bed to adapt better to the shape and movements of your body. Support from cross-slats helps to increase the firmness of the bedding. Some bed bases feature articulated slats. This allows the bed base to faithfully replicate your body’s movements on the mattress.
Some high-end bed bases are fitted with double slats and mounted on flexible ball joints. This combination provides comfort tailored to your needs and reduces pressure points caused by your body. You can adjust the level of support in the lumbar and pelvic areas by moving the sliders. This gives you a personalised sleeping experience that will greatly benefit your sleep.

Bed base with adjustable pneumatic system

The bed base frame is made of solid wood. The slats are made of nylon. They are curved and operate independently of one another. They are connected by four pneumatic tubes, which allow them to interact. Using the pressure gauge, you can monitor the pressure in the tubes and adjust it via an easy-to-use control knob.
This system allows you to adjust the head section from 20 to 40° and the leg section from 10 to 20°. In just a few simple steps, you can raise your head or legs, whether to improve blood circulation or to make breathing easier. The bed base can therefore adapt to your weight and your own definition of well-being. This system ensures that your bed base retains its ability to adapt and adjust over the long term, thereby meeting all your requirements. Body weight will be distributed perfectly, both lengthways and crossways. It is an ultra-responsive and highly durable bed base.

Advantages and disadvantages

A slatted bed base is less expensive, so you can allocate a larger budget towards buying a mattress. All slatted bed bases are compatible with either a wooden or metal bed frame, or simply with four legs that are screwed into place. They are available in all sizes and are suitable for both adults and children.
Manufacturers offer a 5-year guarantee on these bed bases, demonstrating their confidence in their durability and reliability. The invention of the slatted bed base provided a practical and economical solution for households. They are lighter and easier to move. Generally speaking, a slatted bed base makes the sleeping surface firmer and provides ideal support for your mattress. Currently, the slatted bed base is the most common type in France.

Relaxation Bed Base

General principle

The relaxation bed base can be electric or manual. This mechanism allows you to raise or lower the legs, head or upper body to achieve the ideal position for the body whilst at rest. Relaxation bedding combines physical and mechanical principles. This technology is capable of ensuring a physiologically healthy sleep in every respect. It is capable of ensuring total and physiologically healthy rest in every respect. The bed base features double or even triple slats, or raised sections. With new technologies, some slats are carbon-reinforced. Industry professionals refer to relaxation bed bases as T.P.R. (adjustable head and foot sections).
There are many different relaxation models available; your choice will depend on the type of comfort you are looking for. A bed base with 3 sleeping positions (i.e. three possible body positions) will offer fewer options than one with 5 anatomically tailored sleeping positions. With an electric bed base, your relaxation bed will adjust instantly and offer you a wide range of positions. You mustn’t overlook the quality of the support – that is, the mattress. You can fit your adjustable bed base with spring, foam or latex mattresses. You also have the option of having custom-made adjustable bed bases.

Types of reclining bed bases

Manual reclining bed base

The manual reclining bed base works on the principle of pressure balance. It is a slatted bed base that can be fixed or raised manually. It allows you to raise the backrest and elevate your legs. The bed base operates using a rack-and-pinion system that enables the head and/or foot sections to be raised independently.
The bed base reads and adapts to the user’s body shape, thereby redistributing pressure evenly. This provides optimal support for the spine. This mechanism helps to relax the muscles and maintain body temperature in an ideal environment. Thanks to this technology, you can spend more time in bed whilst maintaining excellent posture.

Slatted relaxation bed base

The suspension system of a slatted bed base offers an additional advantage: three-dimensional support. It provides support across the width, length and depth of the bed. It helps to firm up the mattress. The adjustment is carried out manually. This technology gives your bed base a suspension system that acts as a shock absorber.
The slats are made from polyoxymethylene (POM). The components consist of flexible support points that move independently of one another. The slats are mounted on ball joints. You can adjust the firmness of each clip individually. This allows the bed bases to adapt precisely to the contours and movements of your body.

Electric relaxation bed base

Relaxation beds are attracting more and more people seeking bespoke comfort. This allows you to customise your bed to achieve specific levels of comfort and support. The motorised relaxation bed base enables you to adjust the ergonomics of your bedding using a remote control. Models are available with either 2 or 4 completely silent motors. The electric motors come with a two-year guarantee. Some bed bases can even be recessed into a bed frame and feature an upholstered finish that conceals the technical components.
This advancement in bedding gives the bed a central role. It becomes a comfortable living space, designed for an increasingly varied range of activities. These bed bases offer greater freedom of choice when it comes to selecting your desired position. The movement of the adjustment planes can be easily controlled via a remote control. The greater the number of planes and motors, the more precise the adjustment will be

Technology

The bed bases are fitted with 24 V motors powered by a 220 V supply. They are controlled either by a wired control unit, an infrared remote control or even by radio frequency. These are single or dual motors. The first motor(s) are located in the back section; they control the headrest and the adjustable back section. The other motor(s) are located in the leg section and adjust the position of the feet, thighs and calves. If your bed base has dual motors, they are designed to control the adjustment of your sleeping surface independently.
For your safety, bed bases are fitted with a circuit breaker and a reset system. You should opt for models with a backup battery to cope with power cuts. As an optional extra, you can choose a motor synchronisation system that allows you to easily control all your bed base’s functions simultaneously.
The slats of the bed base are fitted with ball joints and individually adjustable sliders. The sliders are located in the shoulder and lumbar zones. The sliders in the shoulder zone allow you to adjust the firmness of the mattress support. The sliders in the lumbar zone allow you to achieve personalised support tailored to your weight. The ball joints are made from elastomer or composite material to ensure greater durability and high elasticity.
The bed bases are fitted with an anti-pinch system to prevent the mattress from getting caught when the backrest is raised. When the headrest is moved, it extends accordingly. The bed base frame has a non-slip coating and locking mechanisms. If you are concerned about magnetic fields, some bed base models feature ferrite rings; otherwise, it is advisable to earth the bed base frame.

The support pads

These are relaxation bed bases with a system of support blocks that replace the slats. This innovative suspension system provides point-by-point support for the body and acts as a shock absorber for pressure points. The advantage of the support blocks is that the heavier parts of the body do not sink in any further than the rest of the body. This multi-support system offers your body absolute comfort and ideal spinal alignment.
The pads are made from polyoxymethylene (POM). This highly resistant and flexible material ensures the bed base provides firm support in the shoulder and pelvic areas. The lifting mechanism, mounted on a metal frame, works in the same way as electric slatted relaxation bed bases. The design of the anatomically shaped cut-outs ensures optimal support and relaxation.

Vibrating bed base

You’ll find high-tech relaxation bed bases offering a vibrating massage. These massage programmes are controlled via the remote control. The vibrating or undulating massage provides deep tension relief. It is highly recommended for people under stress, athletes, and anyone who wants to treat themselves at home. This bedding will provide you with a source of energy and balance by harnessing the benefits of magnetotherapy. This generation of bed bases is designed with features suited to medical needs and is increasingly recommended by specialists.
These are electric bed bases with adjustable pads mounted on flexible slats. The pads are adjustable and powered by a robust electric motor. The design of the bed base requires it to be used exclusively with a massage mattress. They are fitted with an additional joint that raises the sitting area of the bed base to prevent any abdominal compression. The entire sleeping system adapts to each individual’s body shape and guarantees complete relaxation.

Advantages and disadvantages

Relaxation bed bases are ideal for people who spend a lot of time in bed, whether reading, watching television or having breakfast. They may be suitable for heavier individuals. The relaxation zones have been carefully designed. The bed base’s mechanisms ensure a high degree of adaptability by following the body’s shape and movements. In practice, the greater the weight to be supported, the better the flexibility.
Relaxation bed bases are highly recommended for those with circulatory problems. Vascular specialists advise sleeping with the legs slightly raised, as this facilitates venous return. They are also recommended for people suffering from respiratory problems. Raising the head of the bed aids breathing in cases of a cold, allergies or asthma. Finally, a high-quality, electrically operated relaxation bed set comes at a relatively high cost.

Other bed bases and accessories

Storage bed base

A storage bed base offers a solution to your space issues. You’ll be able to maximise storage in your bedroom without compromising on the comfort of a proper bed. The storage compartment can hold between 350 and 500 dm³ of bed linen or clothing. The interior of the storage compartment is very durable and sometimes features a dust-proof lining. This storage bed is an attractive piece of furniture that adds to your bedroom’s décor.
These beds feature an upholstered, slatted, spring or, in some cases, extra-flat bed base. They can be used with a metal or wooden bed frame, or fitted with legs. It is important to choose a mattress suited to the bed base, as one that is too heavy or too light could impair its functionality. The bed base is covered with a non-slip fabric cover featuring retaining straps to prevent the mattress from slipping when the base is raised.
The upper section is mounted on gas or hydraulic struts, making it easy to operate. To make your life easier, these bed bases are supplied as a flat-pack kit with assembly instructions. They are therefore easy to transport, assemble and handle. This product is fitted with a lifting handle at the foot end. The bed base articulates at a 40° angle. They are renowned for their sturdiness and can be handled safely.

Nesting bed bases

When we talk about ‘nesting’, we’re referring to items that slot into one another, which means they are of decreasing size. Applying this system to bed bases results in a functional and clever storage solution. A pull-out bed allows you to create extra sleeping space on a tight budget. This type of bed is best suited to children or unexpected family gatherings.
Each bed slides on castors underneath the one below it. These pull-out beds consist of metal slatted bed bases. They accommodate mattresses of various thicknesses. Most are fitted with a drawer containing a fold-away mattress and spare bed base. You can therefore stack three or even four beds without wasting any space. Furthermore, they are fitted with protective and sound-dampening end caps, which help to prevent squeaking.

Futon

With a futon bed, you’re opting for a Zen-inspired atmosphere. This type of bedding arrived in France in the 1980s. Although Western-style futons are very different from traditional Japanese futons, they have managed to win over a following. A futon consists of two parts: the mattress and the base, whether it is convertible or not. Some futons are made from 100 per cent cotton; they are thin and firm. Nowadays, futons are made from plant-based latex and coconut fibre. When new, these futons are thick and soft. The quality of a futon is determined by its density after the mattress has settled, as well as by the quality of the ticking. The mattress must be turned regularly to ensure a long lifespan.
The bed base should be a slatted frame and may be fitted with a tatami mat. A tatami mat consists of several layers of interwoven and compressed rice straw. Placing a tatami mat on your futon’s bed base will enhance the rigidity and firmness of your bed. You’ll have the ultimate in eco-friendly bedding. Thanks to these 100 per cent natural fibres, temperature regulation is enhanced, providing coolness in summer and warmth in winter.

Round beds

Round beds with round bed bases are still quite rare on the market, but they’re also very romantic. Round beds come in several sizes, ranging from 2.00 metres in diameter to 2.4 metres. Those who choose these models are won over. They come in several versions. You’ll find models in Italian leather encrusted with rhinestones, and even heart-shaped beds. There is also a futuristic design featuring a circular lighting system that simulates sunrise and sunset. These beds are top-of-the-range models, and you’ll feel as though your bedroom is a special, calm, warm and intimate space dedicated solely to your well-being.
Before purchasing a round bed, you’ll need a very spacious bedroom. The bed base is designed in two half-moons, or even four sections, making it easier to transport and navigate narrow staircases. They are made with solid wood slatted bases mounted on legs. To ensure the bed’s stability, the frame has between 12 and 16 legs. And to complement the look of your round bed and your bedroom décor, you’ll find made-to-measure bed linen.

Folding beds

The term ‘folding beds’ is mainly used to refer to sofa beds, BZ beds, click-clack sofas and futons. This is because a folding bed base is required whenever the convertible mechanism is opened. The folding bed base serves as the seat when the sofa is in use. With a sofa bed, you get the best of both worlds: a comfortable, durable sleeping surface and a cosy, stylish sofa.
Bed bases are made from solid wood or plywood slats. The frame is often made of metal. They come in a range of sizes and colours. The undeniable advantage of a folding bed base is its functionality and practicality. Some folding bed bases are supplied as flat-pack kits. This system means a bed base can fit into any room, even a cramped one.

Children’s bedding

As soon as a child outgrows their cot, they need a suitable bed that is both cosy and comfortable. You must choose the bed frame and bed base carefully, as they will usually need to be adjustable to accommodate the child’s growth. Don’t forget that children grow whilst they sleep. It is therefore important to make young people aware of both the quality and quantity of their sleep.
Children need a firm sleeping surface, but one that isn’t too hard. Even if your little ones seem to adapt to all sorts of bedding, you must pay attention to the quality of the bed base and mattress. A good posture for the body and spine can only be beneficial for their rest.

Made-to-measure bed bases

Standard bed base

If you’re 1.90 m or taller, a standard 2-metre bed base can feel a bit cramped. You need to allow for about 20 cm more than your height to feel comfortable and ensure your feet don’t hang over the edge. This principle also applies to heavier people; the bed base must adapt and provide personalised lumbar support. Sleep quality is a variable and individual factor; consequently, the choice of bedding will be specific to each person. For couples where there is a significant weight difference, it is advisable to opt for separate bed bases connected by Velcro or a zip fastening.
The key feature of a bed base must be adaptability. Indeed, the bed base must conform to the body’s shape and movements. Some bed bases feature sliders that allow you to adjust the firmness of the slats to provide support tailored to your weight and sleeping positions. Other bed bases automatically adjust to the body when lying down, providing elasticity and progressive support in line with body weight. The slat structure is unique; it often features triple slats in the shoulder area for greater comfort.

Boat bed base

Given the environment in which your boat or sailing yacht is situated, it is essential to choose your bedding carefully. Most bed bases are made to measure by marine specialists. Made-to-measure cabin linen is also available. The bedding must be perfectly suited to the world of recreational boating and offer all the comfort of a bed just like at home.
For optimal ventilation, the bed base should be either slatted or studded. Slats provide the level of comfort you’ve chosen for your mattress. They are available as single or double slats made from solid wood. Studs offer a softer sleeping surface and provide three comfort zones. The mattress will be made of latex or foam, depending on the bed base chosen. To prevent damp from rising and to optimise ventilation, you should opt for a mattress topper, preferably made of natural fibre or 3D fibre.

Motorhome bed base

It is the motorhome manufacturers who have devised and designed bed bases and mattresses specifically tailored for motorhomes. There is a wide range of solutions available that will remind you of the comfort of your own home. To complement the interior of your motorhome, you’ll find a wide range of fully bespoke bed linen, tailored to the shape and dimensions of your bedding.
The bed bases used consist of wooden slats on a metal frame. This type of bed base provides elasticity and support for the sleeping surface. The mattress can be made of latex, foam or springs, depending on your preferences. It is advisable to use a fibre mattress topper on your bed base to prevent condensation and improve air circulation.

Accessories

For the perfect bedding set from head to toe, you’ll find a wide range of accessories specially designed to complement your bed and your home décor. There are bed base cover strips that can give your bed base a fresh new look, or which can simply be used to refurbish or protect it. Bed base covers work on the same principle; they are washable and made from a variety of fabrics. You can also customise your bed base, giving it a very elegant leather-look finish or simply having images or your own photos printed onto a cover to dress it up.
It’s worth noting that your bed base is repairable and modular. In fact, the slats are sold individually, as are the stops, end caps and crossbars… The advantage of this system is that you can replace just a few slats that are broken or damaged. You can also replace a set of slats to provide superior comfort in specific areas of the bed base. The wooden slats can be cut to size and are easy to fit into the frame.
There is a vibrating device available for the bed base. This small device is placed between the bed base and the mattress. It vibrates when the telephone rings, but can also be used as an alarm clock. When the device is activated, it emits vibrating pulses that wake the person even from a deep sleep. This device is essential if you have a hearing impairment.

Bed Base – Conclusion

The sleeper

According to statistics, sleepers’ attitudes are changing. The bed is no longer used solely for sleeping. Nowadays, people read, use their phones, listen to music, watch television and sometimes even eat in bed. Of course, for most people, the bedroom is also used for making love. The bed is becoming an important part of the home, one that we take care of. Bed bases and mattresses have become part of the consumer world, with their brands and their obsolescence.
We spend around 25 years of our lives sleeping. That amounts to approximately 3,650 nights. This is why bedding should be replaced every 10 years. The quality of a bed base and a mattress is therefore paramount. When buying a bed, it is important to seek advice from knowledgeable people. The majority of French people
(84 per cent) believe that bedding has a positive impact on their quality of life and their health.
Sleep Day, which takes place around 18 March each year, is a real success. It is organised by the Ministries of Health and Sport and the Ministry of Labour. The National Institute for Sleep and Vigilance aims to raise public awareness of the fact that sleep is our only means of restoring our physical and mental capacities. You’ll find open days and events in public spaces all over the place, where you can try out bed bases and mattresses. The aim is to alert the public and let them know that solutions are available when sleep becomes a medical problem.

Hygiene

Every night, we lose nearly half a litre of water through the pores of our skin. The bed base – and particularly the mattress – must absorb and wick away this perspiration. For hygiene reasons, it is therefore vital to air the bedroom every day, change the bed linen frequently, and brush or vacuum your bedding.
If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you can use hypoallergenic mattress protectors and pillows. Some mattresses and bed bases are treated to be antibacterial, anti-mite and anti-fungal. To prevent the growth of dust mites, the room temperature should be between 16 and 18 °.

Quality labels

Bedding manufacturers are using increasingly advanced techniques. There is a thriving economic and industrial sector in France. There is no mandatory label for bed bases. Some manufacturers are members of the APL (Association for the Promotion of Bedding), which represents French manufacturing and expertise. This is a mark of quality, and each manufacturer adheres to precise specifications. These cover the materials used, the manufacturing methods, and cutting-edge technologies, particularly in relation to pocket-spring bed bases.
There is also a ‘Belle Literie’ label which guarantees the durability and quality of the products. This label applies to bed bases, mattresses, duvets and pillows. Choosing these products is a mark of expertise. This label promises benefits for your body, French manufacturing and respect for the environment.
Bedding manufacturers are increasingly adopting an environmental approach. These initiatives are characterised by the use of recyclable materials, renewable energy, waste management, eco-design and reduced packaging. You can now find products bearing the WWF label, such as beech bed bases and mattress covers made from 100 per cent hand-picked organic cotton.
