Definition, description and history of the sofa bed

Definition and description of the sofa bed

A clic-clac is a sofa with a metal frame comprising three parts: the bed base, the mechanism and the mattress. It is a piece of furniture with a dual function, as it is what is known as a‘convertible’ sofa. It folds and unfolds into two parts thanks to the sofa bed mechanism, which allows it to be converted into a bed by lifting the seat and tilting the backrest backwards.

Once unfolded, the clic-clac provides a sleeping surface running parallel to the wall. The sofa bed is available in several sizes to best meet people’s needs and preferences. They come in small sizes (80×190 cm, 80×200 cm or 110×180 cm), ‘standard’ sizes ’ sizes (110×190 cm, 120×190 cm, 130×190 cm or 140×190 cm) and in larger sizes for optimal comfort (140×200 cm or 160×200 cm).

History of the sofa bed

The first sofa bed was invented by Albert Ducrot, who pioneered convertible sofas. He founded his company, Ducal Literie, in 1935. For many years, it was regarded as the leading specialist in convertible sofas and armchairs, as it enabled Albert Ducrot to register numerous patents both in France and internationally. With the Eclipse system, the forerunner of the sofa bed, Albert Ducrot created, for the first time, a sofa capable of transforming into a proper bed. He subsequently adapted this system for the ‘Domine’ bench, which was developed to offer a range of colours to meet the aesthetic needs of households.

The Ducal Literie brand declined following the death of its founder in 1964. In 1993, the company was sold to a Belgian group, which failed to make its mark against the big names in the bedding industry. Ducal Literie remains, however, a mark of quality. Its founder has gone down in history, as his ‘clic-clac’ has entered everyday language.

The components of the ‘clic clac’

The mattress

General information about mattresses

Not all mattresses are suitable for sofa beds. Sofa bed mattresses are therefore specially designed to fit their mechanism perfectly. These mattresses cost as much as standard mattresses.

However, you need to be careful when buying a mattress for your clic-clac, as quality is not always guaranteed. It is therefore advisable to check the density of the mattress, which is generally an indicator of its quality. Mattresses specially designed for sofa beds can be made from polyether foam, polyurethane foam or viscoelastic foam, as well as latex.

Foam mattresses

Types of foam mattresses

There are three types of foam used in sofa bed mattresses. Polyether foam is the least comfortable as its density is around 20 kg perm³. Next comes polyurethane foam, which is of a higher quality as its density exceeds 25 kg perm³ and can reach up to 60 kg perm³.

Finally, there is viscoelastic foam, which is used in high-end foam mattresses. This foam was originally used by NASA and formed the basis of astronauts’ mattresses. It has a density of over 55 kg perm³. This foam is also known as memory foam because it returns to its original shape after a certain amount of time, which helps to reduce muscle tension when used in mattresses.

Advantages of foam mattresses

Polyurethane or polyether foam mattresses are the most affordable. Indeed, these two types of foam used in mattresses are much cheaper materials than latex or the materials used in spring mattresses. This type of mattress is therefore ideal for those on a tighter budget.

Foam is a very lightweight material. A foam mattress is therefore lighter than other types of mattress, making it easier to handle and transport. It is ideal for people who move house frequently. This portability is one of the main advantages of the sofa bed.

Disadvantages of foam mattresses

Foam mattresses are not very durable. They tend to lose their shape and therefore deteriorate more quickly and are more prone to wear and tear. This consequently affects the lifespan of this type of mattress, which will last for a shorter period than latex or spring mattresses.

Due to their low durability and shorter lifespan, foam mattresses will need to be replaced more regularly than other types of mattress. So, although they are cheaper to buy, the need to replace foam mattresses more frequently will result in higher overall costs. Consequently, choosing a foam mattress for a sofa bed would be best suited to fairly occasional use.

Latex mattresses

Types of latex mattresses

There are two types of latex mattress suitable for a sofa bed. There are those made from natural latex, which is derived from the sap of the rubber tree. There are also synthetic latex mattresses.

Both natural latex mattresses and those made from synthetic latex are hypoallergenic. Latex mattresses have a density of between 65 and 83 kg perm³. This density ensures firm, or even very firm, support whilst still providing excellent comfort.

Advantages of latex mattresses

Latex mattresses are extremely durable, making them virtually resistant to sagging. Latex gives the mattress good structural integrity that lasts over time. This prevents any potential sagging issues, unlike with other mattresses. This durability and their virtual resistance to sagging mean that latex mattresses have a much longer lifespan compared to other types, such as foam or wool mattresses.

Another advantage of latex mattresses is that they are hypoallergenic. Latex is a healthy material, free from bacteria and microbes. These mattresses are therefore recommended for people suffering from asthma or allergies, helping them to enjoy a healthier night’s sleep.

Latex mattresses offer the best combination of firmness and softness. They therefore provide excellent comfort and enable a better quality of sleep – and consequently a more restorative one – on a sofa bed. A latex mattress brings almost top-of-the-range comfort to a sofa bed.

Latex mattresses, just like spring mattresses, offer excellent independent support. This means that the movements of the person sleeping next to you will be felt less than on foam or wool mattresses. This also helps to improve comfort and the quality of sleep.

Disadvantages of latex mattresses

Latex mattresses are generally warmer than other types of mattress. As a result, people who sweat a lot whilst sleeping are likely to wake up more frequently due to the heat generated by the mattress. This is therefore a factor to bear in mind when buying a sofa bed.

Latex mattresses are quite heavy compared to other types of mattress. Indeed, as latex is a heavy material, latex mattresses are difficult to handle and transport, which is not ideal if you move house frequently or need to move your mattress around often.

The prices of these mattresses are also quite high, just like those of spring mattresses. For entry-level mattresses, prices range from 250 to 500 euros. For top-of-the-range mattresses, prices can reach 1,000 euros or more.

Sofa beds without a mattress

It is worth noting that there are also sofa beds that do not have proper latex or foam mattresses. In such cases, the mattress is replaced by a leather, imitation leather or fabric cover, padded on the inside with polyurethane or polyester foam. Such a sofa bed cannot be top-of-the-range.

The fact that it is not a standard mattress allows specialist manufacturers to offer sofa beds with sections that fold down independently of one another, something that is not possible with a standard mattress designed in two parts. Another advantage is that there is no need to put the cover back on after each use of the bed. In fact, this type of sofa bed already features a leather, faux leather or fabric cover, which is usually more attractive than the mattress cover. This means there is no cover to deal with.

Sofa beds without a proper foam or latex mattress are very often sold without storage compartments. The duvet, sheets and pillows must therefore be stored elsewhere, which can be a nuisance when you’re trying to maximise space. These upholstered covers are generally made to measure for the sofa bed. When the filling has become compressed or the cover is worn, it is therefore impossible to replace the mattress, as is the case with standard sofa beds fitted with latex or foam mattresses.

The cover

A sofa bed fitted with a proper foam or latex mattress is usually sold with a cover that not only conceals it but also protects it. Putting a fabric cover over the mattress protects it from any spills that might occur, as well as from dust when the sofa bed is in sofa mode. This is very useful when entertaining friends or when you often eat on your sofa bed whilst watching TV.

As well as protecting the mattress, the cover will also conceal it, giving your sofa bed a more attractive look when it’s in sofa mode. What’s more, there is a huge range of covers available in different colours and patterns. This variety gives people plenty of choice, allowing them to select a cover that suits their style and preferences.

Once the sofa has been converted into a bed, it’s best to remove the mattress cover. In fact, using a normal sheet improves comfort and therefore the quality of sleep for the person sleeping on it. On the other hand, if the sofa is used as a bed regularly, the cover will need to be handled frequently, which can become rather a hassle in the long run.

Storage compartment and legs

Some sofa beds feature storage compartments for storing duvets, pillows, cushions, the cover or other items. The compartment is located beneath the bed base and is accessible when the sofa bed is converted into a bed or a sofa. The storage compartment is very practical when looking to make the most of the available space in a room. However, designer sofa-beds are very often available without a storage compartment so as to leave the legs exposed, thereby enhancing the aesthetic appeal.

The legs of sofa beds can be made of metal, wood or hard plastic. This allows customers to choose between these three materials depending on the desired look. Furthermore, there are many different leg designs available to give the sofa bed a stylish look. These legs can be visible or concealed. All these features enable people to choose from a wide range of sofa beds that will perfectly suit their needs and tastes.

Cushions and mattress covers

Some sofa beds come with cushions to enhance comfort when folded out into a sofa. The cushions usually match the sofa bed’s cover. These cushions come in various shapes – they can be round, rectangular or square. Ideally, choose cushions with removable covers, as this makes it easier to wash the fabric and prevents damage to the filling.

A mattress protector is a sheet that is usually waterproof. This sheet therefore protects the mattress from potential stains as well as from perspiration. It is therefore recommended to place a mattress protector on the mattress to keep it clean and ensure it lasts for as long as possible.

Sofa beds and other convertible sofas

Sofa beds

The different types of sofa beds

In the past, sofa beds were synonymous with low-end, rather unattractive sofa beds. This is no longer the case today, as many manufacturers now offer original sofa beds as well as very stylish designs. Below, we’ll list the different types of sofa beds.

The sofa bed bench is the most classic of all. It features a storage compartment for duvets, pillows, covers and other items. People who aren’t too concerned about the look of their sofa will favour this type of sofa bed, which is often cheaper and comes with a storage compartment.

Another type of sofa bed allows you to fold down part of the backrest to create a side table, which is ideal for placing items such as glasses, coffee cups or anything else. This is particularly handy when entertaining friends or family, but also when you like to eat or have a coffee whilst watching television.

Other sofas can be adjusted into a variety of positions. The backrest is divided into two sections, each of which can be folded down as required. What’s more, the edges of the seat can also be folded down to serve as armrests. The advantage of this convertible sofa is that it can be arranged however you like, and its design makes it a very original sofa bed.

Other sofa beds stand out for their understated and sleek design. Indeed, it has a simple yet refined look. It will fit particularly well in a home with contemporary décor. This type of convertible sofa therefore combines practicality and design, as it can be converted into a bed whilst adding a certain character to the home.

The sofa bed will delight those who love to give their home a contemporary feel. Indeed, the distinctive design of the backrest gives this sofa bed a unique and very stylish look. So much for the most common models, because when it comes to innovation, the sofa bed has not finished surprising us.

Advantages and disadvantages of the sofa bed

Advantages of the sofa bed

The main advantage of the clic-clac as a convertible sofa is its comfort and seating capacity. Indeed, the clic-clac offers a fairly generous seat depth, allowing you to sit quite comfortably, unlike the BZ, which offers only limited seating comfort. Furthermore, the clic-clac is wider than the BZ, so it can accommodate more people when folded out as a sofa. People who use the clic-clac more as a sofa are more likely to opt for this type of convertible sofa.

The second advantage of the clic-clac is how quick and easy it is to fold and unfold, as it folds and unfolds in just two movements – hence its name ‘clic-clac’ – and this takes only a few seconds. Furthermore, when unfolding it, there is no need to clear the entire area in front of the sofa, unlike with the BZ.
Some high-end click-clack sofas can be adjusted to a reclining position as well as the standard one. This position allows you to enjoy time with friends or family, but also to get comfortable whilst watching a film or reading a book. As you can see, the click-clack sofa offers numerous advantages.

Disadvantages of the sofa bed

Although the purpose of a sofa bed is to save space, its bulk is one of its disadvantages. In fact, the sofa bed takes up more space than the BZ sofa when folded out as a sofa, as the BZ folds into three sections lengthways, whilst the sofa bed folds in half widthways. People looking to buy a sofa bed are primarily seeking to optimise space in a small room. This can therefore work against the sofa bed, as these people will tend to opt for the BZ sofa.

Although the clic-clac offers a rather wide seat compared to the BZ, this seat is lower than that of traditional sofas. This can become a hindrance over time and cause back problems. Furthermore, this low seating height is not ideal for people suffering from back pain, as standing up requires extra strain on the back.

The sofa bed’s mechanism allows for quick and easy set-up; however, this mechanism tends to wear out quite quickly. Firstly, this will be a nuisance in terms of noise, as it will cause creaking when folding and unfolding the sofa bed, but also when someone is sleeping on it and moves during the night. Furthermore, this rapid wear and tear will mean the frame needs to be repaired or the sofa bed replaced altogether.

The final drawback of the sofa bed is that you need to remove the pillows, duvet and blankets before folding the bed back into a sofa. However, this is only a minor inconvenience, as the storage compartment underneath allows you to stow these items away easily.

Other convertible sofas

The BZ – Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the BZ

The design of the BZ is very similar to that of standard sofa beds. However, the BZ offers a higher but narrower seat than sofa beds. The BZ is a convertible sofa that differs from a standard sofa bed in the way it opens. In fact, the BZ does not use a sofa bed mechanism but unfolds like an accordion by pulling the seat towards you. The sleeping surface is therefore perpendicular to the wall, unlike a standard sofa bed.

One of the major advantages of the BZ over the sofa bed is that you sit on the ‘foot’ section of the mattress; this means you put less strain on the mattress and therefore wear down the parts of the mattress where you lie down more slowly. This extends the mattress’s lifespan compared to a click-clack sofa, where you sit on the parts of the mattress that support your back, hips and shoulders.

The fact that the BZ offers a sleeping surface perpendicular to the wall is also an advantage, as it allows you to face the same direction whether in sofa mode or bed mode. This is therefore handy if you have a television and want to watch it whilst sitting or lying down. It is therefore more comfortable than a sofa bed, which offers a sleeping surface that runs parallel to the wall
When folded out as a sofa, the BZ takes up less space than a pull-out sofa, saving even more space. People with limited living space will therefore prefer this type of sofa bed to make the most of their space. Without a doubt, this is the main advantage of the BZ.

Disadvantages of the BZ

One of the main disadvantages of the BZ is folding and unfolding it. In fact, the BZ is much more difficult to fold and unfold due to its mechanism. This can quickly become a hassle, and people who frequently switch their sofa bed between sofa and bed mode will tend to prefer the clic-clac, which allows for much simpler and quicker folding and unfolding.

The seating comfort is also a drawback of the BZ, as it is much less comfortable on a BZ than on a sofa bed. Similarly, the BZ offers fewer seats than a clic-clac, so people who will mainly use their sofa bed as a sofa will therefore prefer the clic-clac.

When you unfold the BZ, it takes up much more space than a click-clack sofa. This is because the accordion-style folding and unfolding mechanism means it takes up less space when folded, but also requires more clear space in front of the seat.

The futon – Pros and cons

Advantages of the futon

It’s clear that the futon sofa has an extremely understated design, as it consists of a simple wooden frame with a futon mattress placed on top. This style of sofa bed is ideal for those looking for a minimalist, zen-like aesthetic. The futon sofa is a convertible sofa that, in terms of how it unfolds, resembles a BZ sofa more than a clic-clac. Indeed, it unfolds by pulling the seat towards you, creating a sleeping surface perpendicular to the wall. The main difference from the BZ sofa is that the futon sits flush with the floor.

The cotton mattress is a key advantage of the futon sofa, as it makes for a natural and eco-friendly mattress. It is therefore hypoallergenic, which is recommended for people prone to various allergies; they’ll enjoy a very good night’s sleep thanks to this natural mattress. Furthermore, the cotton helps regulate temperature naturally, providing a certain coolness in summer and warmth in winter. Latex and foam mattresses are also available for futon sofas.

The futon sofa mattress is both firm and comfortable. This provides excellent support in both sofa and bed modes. This is therefore an advantage as it ensures optimal spinal alignment throughout the night; the body will not arch, allowing the spine to rest properly.

Disadvantages of the futon

Futons made from 100 per cent cotton tend to wear out quite quickly, so it is important to look after them carefully. This wear and tear causes the cotton inside the futon to settle, resulting in poorer support; the mattress will become uncomfortable and, above all, bad for your back. Weight is also a drawback, as it makes handling this type of mattress very difficult. Folding and unfolding this sofa-bed alternative is therefore more of a hassle, and people who frequently fold and unfold their sofa-beds will tend to prefer

The futon mattress is reputed to be good for the back. However, the fact that it sits flush with the floor makes it unsuitable for people with back problems. Indeed, a very low mattress requires extra effort to get up from, which may accelerate wear and tear on the backs of those with existing back problems.

Care, odours and repairs for sofa beds

Caring for your sofa bed

Routine maintenance

These tips should be followed at least once a week to delay the deterioration of the sofa bed as much as possible and thus extend its lifespan. It is therefore advisable to vacuum the seats and backrest of the sofa bed on a low setting to remove dust and dirt without damaging the fabric, and also to vacuum underneath the seats and the sofa bed. It is also advisable to tap the cushions and mattress to shake out the dust and air them properly, thereby preventing the build-up of dust mites. Care should also be taken not to leave the fabric in direct contact with the sun’s UV rays to prevent it from fading. Similarly, sweat can damage the fabric, even if it has been treated.

Washing the cover

A sofa bed cover can be machine-washed, but to do so, you’ll need a washing machine with a capacity of over 5 kilos, as the cover won’t fit into a machine with a smaller capacity. If this is not the case, self-service laundrettes have such washing machines available. It is advisable to wash the cover on a delicate cycle in cold water – that is, at no more than 30°C – and, above all, do not put the cover in the tumble dryer, as this will damage it.

Some covers cannot be washed in water and therefore require dry cleaning. The best way to clean these covers is therefore to take them to a dry cleaner’s. This will cost a little, but as these covers only need to be cleaned twice a year, it is still reasonable. What’s more, the covers will retain their shape and be cleaned thoroughly.

Finally, if your washing machine is too small, or if you feel that the launderette or dry cleaner’s is too expensive, you could consider washing your sofa bed cover by hand. Admittedly, this is time-consuming and a bit of a faff, but it saves money as dry cleaning can be quite expensive. To wash a cover by hand, simply place it in the bath and wash it by hand. Be careful, however, to use only cold water so as not to damage the fabric. The trickiest part is wringing it out, as the cover will have become quite heavy with water. It’s advisable to have two people to carry out this task to make it easier. Finally, you’ll need to hang the cover out to dry for at least three days to ensure it dries properly.

Many people think that stains from vomit, blood or even urine are the worst kinds of stains for a sofa bed cover. However, these stains can be cleaned quite easily by rubbing the cover with hydrogen peroxide or 28 per cent ammonia. Care must, however, be taken with ammonia vapours, which can be harmful to the lungs. To avoid inhaling these vapours, simply ventilate the room or wear a mask.

As for liquid stains from drinks, simply rub them with soapy water. For stubborn stains from alcoholic drinks, simply rub them with a mixture of 50 per cent water and 50 per cent alcohol. Finally, for the most stubborn tea and coffee stains, 90° alcohol or sodium perborate will do the trick.

For the most common stains, such as grease stains, simply rub them with soapy water; for stains such as chocolate, a cloth soaked in 90° alcohol will be enough to clean the fabric.

Odours from the sofa bed

Odours can easily become ingrained in the fabric of the sofa bed’s cover or mattress. To prevent these odours from becoming ingrained, it is recommended that you air the room where the sofa bed is located every day. Furthermore, it is strongly advised to air the room whenever you are smoking or cooking in the room where the sofa bed is located. This will help prevent odours from becoming ingrained in the fabric and will also improve the air quality in the room.

To remove odours that have become embedded in the sofa bed’s fabric, you can use air fresheners. Some air fresheners do more than just mask odours; they actually absorb them. This may be the simplest method for removing odours from the sofa bed, but the use of deodorisers is harmful to the environment. You must ensure the room is well ventilated when spraying the fabric so as not to inhale too much deodoriser.

Odours become deeply embedded in the fabric of the sofa bed very easily and can sometimes be very stubborn. These can be effectively removed using a natural, non-polluting product: bicarbonate of soda. Simply sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the sofa bed’s mattress and cover, leave it to work for thirty minutes, then vacuum up the powder, which will have absorbed the odours and made them disappear

Repairing the sofa bed

Replacing a slat

To avoid breaking the slats on your sofa bed, it is advisable not to jump on the mattress or throw yourself onto it. You should therefore take reasonable care of your sofa bed. However, slats can sometimes break under pressure or simply because they are worn out. They will therefore need to be replaced. If it is not possible to replace broken slats straight away, it is advisable to try redistributing them to the areas where the body exerts the most pressure, so as not to break any more before purchasing new slats.

As the slats are made of wood, they can give way due to wear and tear or because too much pressure is exerted on them. It is therefore necessary to replace the broken slat so that you can continue to sleep peacefully. The steps to follow when replacing a slat are to measure, cut to size and replace the broken slat with the new one.

The first step is to measure the length and width of the slats on the sofa bed, as there are many different slat sizes; it is therefore essential to know the dimensions of the slats in your particular sofa bed.

In most cases, the slats are secured to the bed base using plastic notches. You therefore need to insert one end of the slat into one of these notches, press gently on the middle of the slat to bend it, and then insert the other end of the slat into the second notch.

Repairing the sofa bed mechanism

The sofa bed mechanism can also become damaged and thus fail to fold out into the sofa position. This is usually due to a bent part of the metal frame or a jammed spring. In such cases, simply straighten the bent part using pliers or a hammer, or unjam the spring. It can also happen that the central bar breaks; in this case, you’ll need to weld it yourself or have it welded if you’re not particularly handy. You could also simply throw the sofa bed in the bin and buy a new one.

Few people realise this, but in most cases it’s better value for money to invest in a new sofa bed than to replace parts such as the slats or the mechanism, for example. In fact, a sofa bed that cost 300 euros and loses around 20 per cent of its value each year will be worth only 60 euros after four years. It therefore makes sense to invest in a new sofa bed, which will almost certainly last longer.

A sofa bed is a convertible sofa, which means that its mechanism, mattress and bed base are subjected to a great deal of wear and tear. It is therefore advisable to invest in a new sofa bed rather than a second-hand one, which will have a relatively short lifespan. Let’s not forget, either, that a sofa bed is part of the room’s décor and may go out of fashion.

Buying advice and prices for sofa beds

Buying advice

A spare bed or a bed for everyday use?

A sofa bed is a significant investment, so it’s essential to define your needs before buying one. In particular, you need to ask yourself whether the sofa bed will be used as an occasional bed or as a bed for everyday use. Depending on your needs, the budget you’ll need to set aside for this product will vary.

If you intend to use it as a daily bed, you’ll need to invest in a high-quality mattress. Memory foam or latex mattresses are recommended. These are much more expensive than polyether or polyurethane foam mattresses. The latter are only recommended if the bed is used infrequently – in other words, if the sofa bed is used as an extra bed.

Things to check before buying

When buying a new or second-hand sofa bed, it is strongly recommended that you check the quality of the mattress, ensure the mechanism works properly and assess the condition of the bed base. The quality of the mattress is the key factor in the comfort of a sofa bed. This is why it is very important to check its condition, paying particular attention to the crease – the area that wears out the most on this type of mattress. Furthermore, you should assess the overall condition of the mattress, as if it is sagging and provides poor support, back pain can develop very quickly.

The mechanism is also a crucial element to check, as it is a part that is subjected to a great deal of strain and friction. If there is a problem with this mechanism, the sofa bed may no longer fold properly or may even fail to unfold at all. It is therefore essential to test the mechanism several times before buying a sofa bed.

Finally, the last part to check is the bed base, which supports the entire sofa bed. You should therefore check the slats and their strength by lying down and sitting on them to test them. Indeed, if the slats are not strong enough, this will lead to wear and tear and, consequently, the slats breaking or coming loose.

When buying, it may be worth checking whether the sofa bed has a removable cover or not. A model with a removable cover will make life much easier for the sofa bed’s user when it comes to future fabric care. Furthermore, the ability to remove the cover will allow the user to change the colour and patterns to suit their preferences. Finally, regarding the cover, before purchasing it, it is advisable to check the care instructions to avoid making mistakes during future washes – such as putting a cover that requires dry cleaning into a washing machine.

Prices of sofa beds

Dimensions and quality of the sofa bed

The price of a sofa bed will depend on its size, its quality and, above all, the mattress chosen.
Size will obviously play a part in the price of a sofa bed, as the larger the sofa bed, the more raw materials are required to manufacture it, and therefore the higher the production cost. This increase in production cost will then be reflected in the final price of the sofa bed. A single-person sofa bed will therefore generally be cheaper than a two-person sofa bed.

The second factor that will influence the price of a sofa bed is its quality. Indeed, a high-quality product – which is therefore sturdy and durable, with a high-quality mechanism – will cost considerably more than a low-end sofa bed that is not very durable and whose mechanism deteriorates quickly over time and with use. It is, in fact, advisable to buy a sofa bed of reasonably good quality to ensure it has a long lifespan and is sufficiently durable.

Mattress quality

The mattress will also play a significant role in the price of a sofa bed, as there are sofa bed mattresses available from €100, but there are also top-of-the-range mattresses costing €600, which will immediately increase the final price of the sofa bed by €500. It is recommended that you buy a mattress of reasonably good quality to ensure a decent level of comfort.

A sofa bed can be bought from as little as 150 euros, but it is best to buy a good-quality one if you sleep on it regularly, without necessarily opting for a top-of-the-range model, which can cost over 1,000 euros. With a budget of between €400 and €600, you’ll find a sturdy, durable and comfortable sofa bed with a good lifespan.

It’s clear that, thanks to its dual function, the sofa bed is an essential piece of furniture in the home. In small spaces, it’s a must-have item. Everyone will be able to find the sofa bed that suits them best in the range offered by Habitat et Jardin.
